The Challenge of the Time Thieves.
In times past there have always been legends of great challenges, greater feats of heroism, and magnificent songs of lore detailing adventures beyond imagination.
What no one ever talks about however is how true some of those legends really are.
This is one such legend, a tale that spans across time itself and reveals a cavalcade of heroes and heroines that would become as much a legend as the adventure they partook in.
It started on a common day, much like any other, the weather was fair, the temperature was warm and humid, though it could be said that a vast majority of such humidity probably came from the excessive amounts of water that surrounded the majestic haven that was Waterfall City.
Waterfall City as it were, was so aptly named for it's location of construction and foundation, given the entire city was constructed on a collective of running waterfalls. The City was formed from cavernous stones carved into individual bricks to construct the city street ways and buildings many layering several stories tall. The only land bridge onto the city was protected by a gateway, along the path into the city following from this gate any who traveled it would be able to see a massive glove on which was the depiction of an ancient super continent known as Pangaea.
The streets were littered with the every day passerby individuals that inhabited the city, both human and saurian alike. Indeed it was a truly awe inspiring sight to see a casual man walk the streets along side a parasaurolophus walkeri. While passing through these streets of a civilized dinosaur and human world one might have found themselves rather breathless by the overall rather deeply stunning impression such a place could leave, or they might find themselves in the middle of such a civilization quickly making friends.
but for two individuals this day would be spent not outside enjoying the sun, or exploring the traded goods of the market, but rather inside a library.
The Library itself was large, easily large enough to fit most medium sized saurians in between the shelved book cases, medium here having the loose term given a medium dinosaur was roughly the size of an elephant in scale and mass.
Reguardless, there in the library stood two humans, both of a middlish age more on the youthful side, dressed in khakis, cloth shirts, and brown leather vests, a deeper brown leather set of boots on each of their feet, one male, the other female.
The female of the two sat at a table a scroll rolled out in front of her, her eyes darting back and forth across the page as she read rapidly, as if in attempt to find some form of specific information.
"Ruddy hell Astina, what is taking so long, you should have been done with that scroll by now" the man said rather impatiently, given his poster and the crossing of his arms he seemed the type to disapprove of waiting for more than a few minutes to get whatever he sought after. The man's hair was a dark wood like brown, his eyes a bright green and his complection a fair caucasian tone.
"Patience Barlamus, these scrolls are of an older text and dialect of saurian, it's harder to make out what they're saying" the woman replied. Astina as it were had bright ginger red hair, and also green eyes very similar to the man she was apparently company with.
"Patience my foot woman! We have no time for games, the captain wanted an report on what we could find out, I don't believe he wanted us to waste our time in a bloody library!" Barlamus responded his tone raising a bit causing just a few around him to look up curiously before he lowered his voice and leaned in closer. "Let's just take the scroll get the hell out of this musty old place, besides these scalies are starting to creep me out, and we should report back to our captain rather soon!" he said before leaning back up.
"Fine, fine we'll do it YOUR way Barlamus" Astina replied with a heavy sigh as she quickly gathered up a collective of papers and the scroll quickly then with a skill that could only be obtained by one who studied for a living, she placed the documents into her satchel with a sort of ease that would keep the documents in mint condition as she quickly got to her feet and began making her way towards the doors, the man quickly on her heels.
Their appearances and mannerisms seemed so common to those surrounding them that none seemed to notice their rather speedy exit, nor the missing documents from the table they had been occupying, as the duo made their way out of the library and onto the streets of Waterfall City blending rather seemlessly into the crowd.
"Breath Deep" A man said in passing as the duo walked down the street. Honestly there was nothing wrong with the statement in the slightest and it was even rather cheerful. The proper response of course should have been "Seek Peace" as any Dinotopian would have known, and yet there came the rather ear befuddling response of.
" Go blow it out your-"
"Barlamus! I'm sorry sir you'll have to forgive my friend... he's cranky and suffering from a rather painful tooth ache" The woman spoke up immediately shooting a rather threatening look to her companion Barlamus as if to tell him to silence himself.
The man in passing blinked rather taken aback but nodded all the same, "O.. of course, I understand fully, I do hope you recover well and soon" he said before turning back to his intended path and continuing along his way.
The man and woman continued along the streets as well, for a silent minute before the man spoke up, "Tooth ache? " he asked inquisitively.
"Yeah, because if you hadn't shut up back there I was going to punch you in the mouth and knock some teeth out, remember we're supposed to make these pacifistic morons like us!" She said double checking that none had heard her.
"Now either be polite, or can it!" she finished quickly before taking an abrupt left into an ally way following along a seemingly specified route in order to reach a dead end, at which stood a total of five other humans, each of them dressed in similar renaissance-esque style.
"So.... you've had all morning... what did you find?" asked a man sitting center to the group of five. He sat atop a barrel his back to a wall in recline as he puffed a pipe and paused for an answer.
" This place is crawling with dinosaurs, and everyone is extremely gullible" Barlamus responded crossing his arms again.
This earned him a swift elbow to the ribs as Astina spoke up, "We searched the city and did some research in the Library, there haven't been any real documents describing what you're looking for Captain, though we did find a few scrolls describing a type of rock material that gives off a radiant light called Sunstones... they're described as being rocks that are so beautiful to behold one might swear they were holding the sun in their hands.... gemstones like that would fetch a fair marketable price back home" she said with a smile.
"Is that so?" the man with the pipe asked rhetorically, "Well we're not here for sunstones... not yet anyways... The texts back home describe there being stones of unique properties on this world on this exact island! Those "Sunstones" you're jabbering on about are little more than the radiating cores of some long past space rock that hit this planet eons ago any miner with half a brain back home could go out and dig one up!" he spat out quickly....
"We're here for stones that invoke the powers of time travel." he said looking to the others... "IS THAT CLEAR?" he asked demandingly as all at once he recieved a rather quick
"Aye Captain!" in response.
"Good... now then keep digging for information, ask the locals as well, someone somewhere is BOUND to know something..." He said as his crew of six got to their feet and began fanning out into the city, "I want you all back here in three hours time with something BETTER to report.... I'll be finding us a place to stay in the mean time, and DON'T BLOW YOUR COVER!" he said looking specifically to Barlamus as he said so.
Barlamus nodded " Aye-aye captain I'll be as polite as possible." he said in a reassuring tone.
"You'd better Barly... or so help me no one on this Earth will be able to help you." their captain replied rather ominously.
Meanwhile, in a rather secluded allyway on the opposite side of Waterfall City....
All was quite, in fact there weren't even any humans or saurians near by, then all at once a breeze began to blow, as a strange siren type sound seemed to howl through the air as if carried by the wind from a place not of the world. The breeze grew stronger into a gale of wind blowing papers and some trash about as from a central point in the air lightning seemed to arc all over the place webbing to the corners of the buildings and along the walls.
A hole rather suddenly opened up as the electricity induced inter-dimensional rift seemed to stretch backwards then hurl forwards like a slingshot throwing forward an individual no bigger than an eight year old human child.
The figure was a light pinkish red in color, tones of yellowish orange could be seen along the neck and the underside of a rather saurian tail suggesting that this individual was not quite human. The figure sported a crest from the back of its head as well as several bluish feathers. The figure had bright blue eyes, and seemed dressed much like a human would, in khaki traveling pants, a black long sleeve shirt and a brown vest, from which a golden chain extended to one of the vests pockets. a similar chain was wrapped around the figure's neck, as a necklace. The figure wore no shoes, most likely out of comfort given they had clawed feet.
"Right... well.. oof" the individual saurian like creature began to speak to itself as it clambered to its feet and dusted itself off.
"Not one of my more gossamer landings, but not the worst" it said simply, by this point one could judge from the sound of the voice that this individual was most likely a youthful male.
The saurian reached into his vest pocket and pulled out an antique looking solid gold pocket watch of sorts, flipping the cap open as he looked at it, a smile creeping across his face.
" the early two thousands, Earth, Ooooh Dinotopia, Waterfall city? no kidding" he said rather softly his eyes widening with excitement as he clipped the pocket watch closed and pulled out a pen sized cylindrical device of sorts, it was black on one end that seemed to taper to a cone like point from which a small blue light glowed. the rest was a shiny metalic silver as the saurian held it in his hand like one would hold a paint brush or a pencil perhaps. he pressed down on a button as the tip glowed brilliantly the color switching from blue to a bright red as he quickly moved the glowing red penlight of sorts left to right quickly. All the while the penlight was making some sort of whirring hum sound almost as if it was vibrating out a frequency.
The saurian then looked to this rather strange penlight and smiled, "Oh really... seems I'm not the only one." his smirk widened, "Marvelous" he said as he put the vibraty pen thingy away in his inner vest pocket and stuffed his clawed dinosaur hands into his pants pockets and began walking out of the ally way as if nothing unusual at all had happened in the slightest.
