Tizera exited her small cabin and walked down the hallway to the stairs leading to the cargo hold. She could hear the quiet sounds of the animals kept there and it unconsciously calmed her. If the animals were content than you knew everything was alright.
Squinting in the darker space, Tizera made her way past a few stalls containing horses and arrived at the kennels. There were only two dogs there, both larger breeds. The smaller of the two put it's front paws up on the cage door and panted happily as Tizera approached, the other idly wagged it's tail. The young woman grinned and opened the cage door slipping into the large enclosure. The black and white female dog licked her hand and sniffed at a pocket as the girl took a seat chuckling at her friend.
"Here you go, this is what you're looking for isn't it." Tizera slipped a strip of bacon out of her pocket and fed it to her dog Kaida.
They sat in silence together feeling the water beneath the boat rocking a tad violently. It had only been four days since leaving port in Perth and as often as she had sailed before, Tizera already yearned to feel the solidness of land.
Kaida gave a quiet whine which snapped Tizera out of her reverie and brought her attention to the motion of the ship and the restlessness of the other animals in the cargo hold. With her hand paused on Kaida's neck Tizera leaned forward and listened carefully to the sounds above decks. There didn't seem to be any unusual ruckus so the girl shrugged and gave Kaida a final pat, then exited the enclosure. She pushed back her long red hair as she stood straight and made her way back upstairs and then further to the main deck.
The brighter light hurt her eyes slightly and as she shaded them with he hand she saw the dark clouds baring down on them. A few of the crew of the medium sized cargo ship went about tying loose objects down at a quickened pace which mildly alarmed Tizera. As one of the men passed her on his way towards a large coil of rope Tizera put out her hand to stop him.
"Excuse me, what's going on? Is that storm cloud gonna give us problems?"
The man gave a furtive glance in the direction of the ominous storm. "We just making sure nothing gets lost. We've seen plenty storms before this'un so there ain't much to worry bout. Just make sure you stay bellow decks missy." He continued on his way after giving her an encouraging grin.
Tizera rushed back down to the animal holds and let Kaida out of the kennel. The sounds coming form the other animals was unnerving and she wanted to get Kaida out of there quickly. They ran back up to Tizera's room and she shut the door tightly feeling it was stupid of her to be so panicky. Storms always happened and this was a seasoned crew. No reason to be scared.
Tizera breathed deeply and lay on her bunk with the lab/collie cross beside her trying not to think about how much the waves chopped at the sides of the boat. Despite her moment of fright Tizera soon was asleep oblivious to the mayhem above decks.
Crash
Kaida barked and unceremoniously stuck a paw in Tizera's face which woke her from her nap. The young woman gazed franticly about in the darkened room and slid off the bed standing on the the floor. Then she noticed the odd tilt. Oh my god we've been hit or something! Tizera grabbed for Kaida and headed for the door. There were loud voices and the forbidding sounds of wood and metal creaking against each other.
As they entered the hallway other passenger and crew were running about grabbing personal possessions and heading above decks. Tizera and Kaida followed quickly both their hearts beating fast. The scene that met them as they got out into the open was frightening.
The sky was a sickly grey-black and the waves were viciously clawing their way closer and closer to the railings. The wind howled and pushed violently against the people scattered across the deck trying to get a lifeboat ready. The ship seemed to be fairly steading in the water though, they must have hit a shallow point in the ocean. Tizera wasn't sure if that was a blessing or not.
The girl had no idea what to do other than grab a life jacket for herself and tie a rope from Kaida's collar to her own belt. She didn't want her best friend to drown when she could have saved her. This way at least the life jacket would float them together.
Tears of pure terror mixed with the rain that started to fall as the storm began to center on the area and Tizera clung to the railing as people ran aimlessly about. No one seemed to know what to do, the captain of the cargo ship hollered orders franticly and two of the lifeboats were lowered filled with panic stricken passengers. There was only one more boat left and it was soon full as-well and Tizera hadn't even gotten a chance to get on. Every breath seemed to catch in her throat and she screamed at the them to let her on but it was too late.
Suddenly a massive wave hit from the side and the ship careened throwing Tizera, Kaida and about five of the crew members into the water. Tizera's head broke the surface and she gulped in air as the salt stung her face. Franticly she pulled n the rope connecting herself to her dog and Kaida's panting face bobbed over to her. She hugged her friend as she tread water taking most of Kaida's weight and they drifted away form the destroyed ship. Tizera cried in defeat, there was no way the two of them would be able to survive this. The rain pelted their heads and shoulders that were above water and Tizera lay floating on her back with Kaida partially on top of her letting the current take them. It was the end.
Exhausted, Tizera passed out letting the life jacket and the buoyancy of the salt water keep them afloat.
Tizera felt something slide against her legs and she coughed ocean water out and blinking the rain out of her eyes. Kaida was paddling beside her growling at something out of Tizera's sight. Then she felt it again, something bump against her from underneath. Her first thought was shark! And a nose popped up in front of her and gave a sharp squeal. It was a dolphin! Kaida nudged Tizera with her nose to make sure she was alright and Tizera gave her an affectionate rub.
The dolphin slipped below water again and stuck it's dorsal fin under Tizera's floating arm. "I suppose that means you want me to hold on?" Tizera's voiced cracked from being dry despite all the water they were in. She took a firm hold of the friendly dolphin's fin and wrapped her other arm around Kaida as they took off. Waves washed over them as the trio zipped across the dreary ocean, the storm was behind them but the wind was still stiff and the rain strong. Sooner than Tizera expected she saw the dark outline of land in the distance. It looked slightly tropical, with palm trees and large leafed plants, which is what she expected.
When they got close enough for Tizera to stand tippy toed on the sandy floor the dolphin dropped them off giving a quick chirp and splashed back off into the ocean. That was odd...and very welcome Tizera thought to herself as her and Kaida made their way onto the beach littered with flotsam from the recent storm.
The knot she had tied to keep Kaida and herself together was water tightened and her weakened fingers couldn't undo it so she took off the life jacket instead. Side by side they walked up to the jungle line and sat down under cover of some wide leafed bush. Tizera was so tired and she had no idea where she was.
