Name: Gordon Bellsure (this is an awful, awful pun)
Age: 47
Gender: male
Species: Human. Had brown hair once but now has grey hair, grey eyes, average build, average height
Location: all over the place, but he generally hangs around his home-town of Cornucopia
Personality: This man is a musician who loves his work. He also loves a good story and the hustle-bustle of city life, and he never passes up the chance to find some adventure. In fact, he has been known to take his drum and wander through the city streets in search of little excitement. It’s an old habit that he can’t quite seem to get rid of, although he always seems to end up hopelessly lost. Also, he loves kids, and willingly watches the little ones of busy Cornucopian mothers while they do their daily errands. The only thing that really gets him down is his grumpy father and drizzly weather—which forces him off the market streets but doesn’t offer anything out of the ordinary. Give him a mug of tea and an eager audience, however, and he should cheer up quickly.
Effects: A 16” bodhràn with a green finish on the rim and a hardwood tipper. (Ignore the fact that he’s a native—this is important!)
How you ended up on the island: Gordon was born in Cornucopia to a pair of musicians. (Needless to say, the lad grew up loving music—particularly the battered old frame drum he’s carried for most of his career.) As a kind of troubador in a family of troubadors, he’s been to most of the island’s cities.
Earth, Air or Water: Earth. The man’s a drummer, after all!
Name: Ciara Alvidrez
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Species: Human. Rather hispanic in appearance, with thick brown hair and brown eyes. She’s short and isn’t some skinny maiden. (She may not be pretty, but the girl could care less.)
Location: Canyon City, and all over the Amu River gorge
Personality: Ciara’s a bit of a geek. Her parents were both Skybax riders, but rather than take to the skies, she became fascinated by the carvings and statues that line the less-explored areas of the Amu River gorge. She has loved the mysterious history of Eastern Dinotopia ever since she was a little girl, and after studying in Waterfall City, she began to conduct her own archaeological expeditions in the canyon where she grew up. She tackles difficult situations with a smile on her face and a kind of enthusiastic energy, and she spends her spare time doing the things she loves best—climbing and exploring the banks of the Amy River.
How you ended up on the island: Her grandfather, Diego Alvidrez, was a sailor on the Californian merchant vessel Con Estrellas, who was shipwrecked on Dinotopia years ago. Their family has lived on the island ever since
Earth, Air or Water: Earth
A result of my old wish to be an archaeologist! That little dream went in another direction when I found out how much work was involved before you even get into the field.
Name: Asim Suhayl
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Species: Human. Long black hair and sparse beard, “black” eyes, sun-browned skin, tall and fit. Altogether, a man of the desert.
Location: The Great Desert
Personality: Asim is generally a quiet man—a “gentle giant” who finds himself more at home with dinosaurs than with others of his own species. Having lived his entire life wandering the Great Desert, he cherishes the soft sounds of the winds and sands over the chatter of the city, and he loves to watch the stars and find the stories written in the night sky. As a result of his nature to seek the open desert, he is very possibly claustrophobic, although he has never been in a city or forest to prove or disprove that fear. He has a limited knowledge of medicine, but his true love is astronomy and the study of the heavens. His friends are few, but those that are, he would trust with his very life. Even so, he remains very guarded about his own feelings and memories, and counts as his family only the weathered Ankylosaurus he sometimes travels with.
How you ended up on the island: Asim was born in the Great Desert among a nomadic people. In his entire life, he has never ventured further west than the Amu River.
Earth, Air, or Water: Air
After The Journey to Chadara comes out, there will probably be a sudden surge of desert-dwelling characters. I can now say that this did not affect my character's creation at all, and that Asim was the first! This comes from my own fascination with Arab cultures, and nothing else!
